The British Council has announced it is to scale down its operations in Europe to expand its work in the Middle East, north Africa and Asia.
More than £7.5m - nearly a third of the government money it now spends on Europe - will be transferred to projects aimed at stopping young people drifting towards extremist groups by building trust between the UK and the Islamic world.
Funding for projects in these areas has gradually increased over the past few years, from £11.2m in 2003-04 to £14.5m this year.
Over the next two years, the council will close all its public access buildings in EU countries, plus Norway and Switzerland, funded through its annual government grant. This will mean a reduction in local arts, science and education events and the closure of information centres in Finland, Hungary, Slovenia, Lithuania, Austria, Slovakia, Latvia and Estonia. Other centres not attached to teaching or examination work and unable to become self-financing are expected to follow.
